Cisco’s Unified Computing Systems announcement is a sonic boom that recognizes how customers will benefit from simplifying operations from two different operations teams for servers and networking, down to one. This unified solution translates to a lower total cost of ownership. UCS also gives customers a choice of talking to a new vendor. So is it impactful? YES. But how long will it take?
What does it take for this to actually spread across enterprises (i.e. gain market share)? Just as other large technology companies have had trouble expanding into new markets, Cisco will need to move beyond the network operations that the company has historically been limited to in order to make the change actually happen.
Getting through this shift will be difficult and will ultimately determine how long it will take for this initiative to be successful in getting market share for Cisco.
