Opening up APIs does not mean signing up for creating a developer community or a platform. Many folks are talking about “turning an application into a platform” strategy. How many platforms we do know. It is one thing to access an API and check out the docs on the Web and another thing to become part of “community.” There are not that many developer communities out there and more importantly there are a very few platforms out there. Building a platform and maintaining it take a very focused strategy over a long period of time. Check out Joel on Software about platform.
