SOA and API – many differences, but coming closer

Interesting article from Dion Hinchcliffe on running your SOA like a Web start up. As with most of Dion’s writing, well worth a read. The difference between SOA and cloud computing/APIs is well understood. Blogged on it recently. The question is how can we apply Web principles to the enterprise computing? Lets start by understanding [...]

RSA’s customer centric approach to cloud adoption

EMC’s RSA Security division released a two studies. Few comments:
    - 50% of all folks interviewed (enterprises with more than $1B in revenue) are doing cloud computing
    - 66% of those do not have a security strategy
    - RSA has put together a “Security for Business Innovation” council comprised of 10 security executives chosen by RSA.
    Kudos to RSA [...]

    On-premise, on-demand, or both?

Many of you probably read Phil Wainewrights recent blog on “Why Bother with Multi-tenancy?” Good reading. The pros and cons for on-premise and on-demand are well known. no point of stating the obvious. The question on how to make a decision is trickier. Here is my perspective:
    Market/Customer:
This is by far the most important perspective. [...]

APIs will decide the next generation Web sites

Jonathan Mendez wrote an AWESOME blog post on API Battle Plans: Fighting for Next. Liked the concept of CUDA – content, utility, data and analytics.
At Sonoa we completely agree with Jonathan’s assessment. As with all inflections points, we will only know after we have passed it, but it certainly fees like we have either reached [...]

Cloud computing vs. SOA – it is simple

Much debate on SOA vs. Cloud computing. Not sure it is worth having.
SOA is an approach. Much like OOP (object oriented programming). Make building and maintaining IT systems more efficient.
Cloud Computing is about enabling technology. Much like Client/Server or Web Computing, the drivers are costs and time to market/revenue.
ALL customers that we talk to get [...]

Cloud Computing is about “Web scale”

Interesting Forrester report called “Trends in Cloud Computing” by James Staten dated May 26th, 2009. Worthwhile read. Few noteworthy points:
“Cloud computing” contains the seeds of IT’s next generation – YES. This is real, much like client server and Web computing… in fact probably has benefits of both – cost and revenue.
    Cloud’s customers (slide #16) – [...]

The way to cloud security is diligence

Eric Ogren wrote this week on how to address enterprise cloud/SaaS data security issues. He writes that it’s particularly difficult “to secure the new boundaries between the enterprise, the cloud service and the end user while managing dependencies on off-premise infrastructure and privileged operators.” He notes there will be an estimated 75% of [...]

Cloud archiving will be a late bloomer

The move by enterprises to store data in the cloud is logical… but this won’t happen over night. Moving crucial data to the cloud as the sole archive will most likely be one of the last business operations to move entirely to the could. Why? Trust. Spoken before on enterprise trust issues with the cloud, [...]

Staying nimble – enterprise cloud adoption

Dion Hinchcliffe wrote recently on the ways in which cloud computing will change business. Though he recognizes the challenges to adoption in terms of trust around security and vendor lock-in, there’s clear potential in the enterprise – driving new revenue streams, outsourcing IT services, and the reconciliation of traditional SOA with the cloud and other [...]

    Has the CIO really “died?”

TechRepublic wrote a piece on the changing role of the CIO in today’s economic and cloud computing landscape. There’s no question that the role of the CIO changes when a company moves to the cloud, I’d hardly say the role has become undeserving of the C-level. Patrick Gray writes that IT will likely split into [...]
